How much cord do I need for my shamanic drum with cord handle?
Depending on your wishes for your drum you need a certain amount of metres of cord. A drum with a cord handle is made from two or three lengths of cord. For our calculation we use the method explained in the DIY drum building kits. Click here for the prepared calculations. Berekening hoeveelheid touw bij een sjamanendrum
Would you prefer to calculate it yourself? The formulas are below:
step 1 loops
The first length of cord are the loops. You thread this cord through the skin to create loops:
Formula Loops = 1.5 × circumference frame + 0.30 m for the knot
step 2 lacing cords
With the following formula you can calculate the length of cord for the lacing cords. S stands for the number of lacing cords you want in your drum (12, 16, 20, 24 cords)
Formula number of Lacing cords (S) = S × (diameter frame + 15 cm) + 0.30 m for the knot
step 3 centre
Would you like to give your legs a different colour than the lacing cords? That is certainly possible. You finish off the drum after tensioning the lacing cords under the centre and tie a cord in a different colour to the finish of the lacing cord. You then get an extra knot under the centre. Then you start the legs with the wraps around the lacing cords.
How many legs (P) do you want in your shamanic drum? Four or five?
Formula number of Legs (P) = P × 0.60 m + 0.30 m for the knot

How much cord do I need for my shamanic drum with metal ring?
Actually that is very simple because with a metal ring of 10 cm or 15 cm you save 1 metre of cord and with a metal ring of 20 cm 2 metres of cord are saved. You can use the same pdf Berekening hoeveelheid touw bij een sjamanendrum and add up the amount of cord for the loops and the lacing cords minus 1 or 2 metres for the centre.
